Dear Kathleene:

Knowing of your strong interest in energy independence and global warming,
I am writing to update you on these critical issues.

The 110th Congress is working to move America in a New Direction for
energy independence – to lower gas prices, make America more secure,
and launch a cleaner, smarter, more cost-effective
energy future that creates hundreds of thousands of green jobs, reduces
global warming and provides relief to consumers.

American families and businesses are reeling from paying record high gas prices,
while oil companies are earning record profits.
With prices averaging nearly $4.40 per gallon in our state,
Californians, and San Franciscans in particular, are hard hit with some
of the highest prices in the country. The failure to diversify our energy sources
- with bold investments in renewable energy and more efficient technology –

leaves
our nation dangerously dependent on foreign oil, and hurts our economy and our families.

How this happened is no mystery. The White House received input from the oil
industry in writing their plan, which benefitted the oil industry.
The oil companies are earning record profits while
Americans are paying record prices.

Even so Republicans in Washington are only offering more of the same with
drilling as their solution -even though 68 million acres of federal lands are already
open and leased for development.
Oil companies are warehousing the public’s resources, keeping domestic
supply lower and prices higher. Drilling in the pristine
Alaskan Wildlife Refuge would not yield any oil for 10 years-and in
22 years would only save consumers about 2 cents a gallon.
The bottom line: America has less than 3 percent of the world’s oil supply,

but we use 24%-so drilling is not much of a solution at all.
I am committed to protecting California’s coastline from any new oil and gas leasing.

The New Direction Congress has a new energy policy to reduce our dependence on
foreign oil by reducing demand through greater efficiency and accelerating the use of

renewable fuels – both of which will result in
lower prices at the pump. Under Democratic leadership, last year we enacted the
landmark Energy Independence and
Security Act,

raising vehicle fuel efficiency standards for the first time in three decades,
increasing our commitment to
affordable American-grown biofuels, imposing energy efficiency standards for appliances
and buildings, and protecting
consumers from energy price and supply manipulation. The increase in fuel efficiency
standards is one of the most
effective ways to reduce gas prices and will save families
from $700 to $1,000 per year at the pump.

We are building on this success, diversifying our energy sources,
and increasing domestic supply and conservation, while protecting
consumers and providing relief from record prices at the pump.
To increase supply, Congress recently required the Bush Administration to
temporarily stop filling the Strategic Petroleum Reserve (SPR),
resulting in an additional 70,000 barrels of oil a day coming onto the market and is fighting to
free more oil from the SPR; the increased
supply may bring down prices a bit. To protect consumers the House of Representatives
passed bipartisan legislation requiring
the Administration to use its emergency powers to curb excessive speculation and other

practices distorting the
energy markets to prevent gamesmanship from driving up fuel prices. A clear majority also voted to investigate and punish those
found guilty of price gouging.

To promote conservation and bring about a green future, the House also passed legislation to
encourage public transit by reducing fares for commuters and expanding transit services.
Congress has also been working to provide tax
incentives for renewable energy, including incentives for plug-in vehicles, create hundreds of thousands of green jobs,
and spur American innovation and business investment. President Bush and Republicans in Congress have repeatedly opposed
these critical efforts to expand renewable energy across America.

As Speaker of the House, I made energy independence my flagship issue.
The New Direction Congress will continue to search for solutions to the energy
crisis while still protecting our environment from unnecessary assault. We will continue
to offer innovative energy solutions, pressing for legislation that invests in clean, renewable

energy and efficient technologies, reduces transit fares, helps Americans struggling with energy
prices, rewards conservation, cracks down on oil speculators and on price gouging, forces
Big Oil to
‘use it or lose it’ on federal drilling permits, and transitions America to a new more
affordable energy future.

Sincerely,

Last week, Congressman Ed Markey (D-Mass) visited FAS to talk about the India-US deal. Markey, who strongly supports closer ties with India, opposes the nuclear deal because it undermines the Non-proliferation Treaty (NPT). A transcript and video of his comments are on the FAS website.

What I found most interesting about his talk was a graphic showing the growth in U.S.-Indian trade over the past few decades. (Our chart is not a reproduction of the chart used my Mr. Markey but created from the same data.) It goes upand up and up. It has gone up even during politically difficult times, for example

Monticello, January 12, 1819

Dear Sir,

—The problem you had wished to propose to me was one which I could not have solved; for I knew nothing of the facts. I read no newspaper now but Ritchie’s, and in that chiefly the advertisements, for they contain the only truths to be relied on in a newspaper.

I feel a much greater interest in knowing what has passed two or three thousand years ago, than in what is now passing.

I read nothing, therefore, but of the heroes of Troy, of the wars of Lacedæmon and Athens, of Pompey and Cæsar, and of Augustus too, the Bonaparte and parricide scoundrel of that day.

I have had, and still have, such entire confidence in the late and present Presidents, that I willingly put both soul and body into their pockets.

While such men as yourself and your worthy colleagues of the legislature, and such characters as compose the executive administration, are watching for us all, I slumber without fear, and review in my dreams the visions of antiquity.

There is, indeed, one evil which awakens me at times, because it jostles me at every turn. It is that we have now no measure of value. I am asked eighteen dollars for a yard of broadcloth, which, when we had dollars, I used to get for eighteen shillings; from this I can only understand that a dollar is now worth but two inches of broadcloth, but broadcloth is no standard of measure or value.

I do not know, therefore, whereabouts I stand in the scale of property, nor what to ask, or what to give for it.

I saw, indeed, the like machinery in action in the years ’80 and ’81, and without dissatisfaction; because in wearing out, it was working out our salvation. But I see nothing in this renewal of the game of “Robin’s alive” but a general demoralization of the nation, a filching from industry its honest earnings, wherewith to build up palaces, and raise gambling stock for swindlers and shavers, who are to close too their career of piracies by fraudulent bankruptcies.

My dependence for a remedy, however, is with the wisdom which grows with time and suffering. Whether the succeeding generation is to be more virtuous than their predecessors,

I cannot say; but I am sure they will have more worldly wisdom, and enough, I hope, to know that honesty is the first chapter in the book of wisdom.

I have made a great exertion to write you thus much; my antipathy to taking up a pen being so intense that

US – Russia 123 Agreement on the Hill
On Thursday, June 12 the House Foreign Relations Committee met for over three hours and heard testimony from members of the Committee, a representative of the Bush administration, and expert witnesses regarding the pros and cons of supporting the Agreement Between the United States and Russia for Cooperation in the Field of Peaceful Uses of Nuclear Energy (Agreement) that President Bush submitted to Congress. As discussed in an earlier blog,

brainy quotes

A Bill of Rights is what the people are entitled to against every government, and what no just government should refuse, or rest on inference.

A wise and frugal government, which shall leave men free to regulate their own pursuits of industry and improvement, and shall not take from the mouth of labor and bread it has earned – this is the sum of good government.

Advertisements contain the only truths to be relied on in a newspaper.

All tyranny needs to gain a foothold is for people of good conscience to remain silent.

All, too, will bear in mind this sacred principle, that though the will of the majority is in all cases to prevail, that will to be rightful must be reasonable; that the minority possess their equal rights, which equal law must protect, and to violate would be oppression.

Bodily decay is gloomy in prospect, but of all human contemplations the most abhorrent is body without mind.

Do not bite at the bait of pleasure, till you know there is no hook beneath it.

Errors of opinion may be tolerated where reason is left free to combat it. [how Bright of a reply?]

I would rather be exposed to the inconveniences attending too much liberty than those attending too small a degree of it.

Dear Member of the Legislature and Friends:

This letter is to ask for your help for the many constituents in our country who are being affected unjustly by electronic weapons torture and covert harassment groups. Serious privacy rights violations and physical injuries have been caused by the activities of these groups and their use of so-called non-lethal weapons on men, women, and even children.

Artificial intelligence

The History Of Zork

Artificial intelligence (AI) is both the intelligence of machines and the branch of computer science which aims to create it.

Major AI textbooks define artificial intelligence as “the study and design of intelligent agents,”[1] where an intelligent agent is a system that perceives its environment and takes actions which maximize its chances of success.[2]

[borrowed]

AI can be seen as a realization of an abstract intelligent agent (AIA) which exhibits the functional essence of intelligence.[3] John McCarthy, who coined the term in 1956,[4] defines it as “the science and engineering of making intelligent machines.”[5]

Among the traits that researchers hope machines will exhibit are reasoning, knowledge, planning, learning, communication, perception and the ability to move and manipulate objects.[6] General intelligence (or “strong AI“) has not yet been achieved and is a long-term goal of AI research.[7]

[borrowed]

AI research uses tools and insights from many fields, including computer science, psychology, philosophy, neuroscience, cognitive science, linguistics, ontology, operations research, economics, control theory, probability, optimization and logic.[8] AI research also overlaps with tasks such as robotics, control systems, scheduling, data mining, logistics, speech recognition, facial recognition and many others.[9] Other names for the field have been proposed, such as computational intelligence,[10] synthetic intelligence,[10] intelligent systems,[11] or computational rationality.[12]

Humanity has imagined in great detail the implications of thinking machines or artificial beings. They appear in Greek myths, such as Talos of Crete, the golden robots of Hephaestus and Pygmalion’s Galatea.[13] The earliest known humanoid robots (or automatons) were sacred statues worshipped in Egypt and Greece, believed to have been endowed with genuine consciousness by craftsman.[14]

[borrowed]

In medieval times, alchemists such as Paracelsus claimed to have created artificial beings.[15] Realistic clockwork imitations of human beings have been built by people such as Yan Shi,[16] Hero of Alexandria,[17] Al-Jazari[18] and Wolfgang von Kempelen.[19] Pamela McCorduck observes that “artificial intelligence in one form or another is an idea that has pervaded Western intellectual history, a dream in urgent need of being realized.”[20]

In modern fiction, beginning with Mary Shelley‘s classic Frankenstein,** writers have explored the ethical issues presented by thinking machines.[21]

[borrowed]

If a machine can be created that has intelligence, can it also feel? If it can feel, does it have the same rights as a human being? This is a key issue in Frankenstein as well as in modern science fiction: for example, the film Artificial Intelligence: A.I. considers a machine in the form of a small boy which has been given the ability to feel human emotions, including, tragically, the capacity to suffer. This issue is also being considered by futurists, such as California’s Institute for the Future under the name “robot rights“,[22] although many critics believe that the discussion is premature.[23][24]

What, then, is the true advantage of a text adventure over a graphical one? For me, the answer to this question lies entirely in the perceived freedom and intelligence of the parser.

[borrowed]

Its nice to be able to interact with a game in such a thoroughly compelling manner. And its here that I see the future of Zork, or the future of any text-based interactive narrative. The key is an increasingly sophisticated parser, with enough artificial intelligence to make convincing responses to anything the player might type; it would be as though there was an actual person or dungeon master on the other side of the screen.

It is true that such technology is far beyond what we cu
rrently have available, but consider how far graphics technology has come since 1980. What if the same level of exponential growth had occurred in Artificial Intelligence and Natural Language Processing?

The things that interest me, writes Montfort, are advancing the state of the art, tackling simulation and language in new ways, and doing important work within our culture.

Perhaps what well find beyond Zork is not better graphics, but the wily Dungeon Master himself

DBZ: Franchise Player
We introduce the main characters, ideas and relationships.
  • Load times getting you down?
  • To the layperson, Dragon Ball Z is an old anime about people with big hair and little noses who scream a lot and punch each other into mountains. But to the learned nerd, Dragon Ball Z is part of a complex saga in which selfless defenders of humanity give up their lives to thwart the forces of evil. Don’t let the simple animation style fool you; there’s much more to Dragon Ball Z than meets the eye. That’s why Franchise Player is here to show you what you’ve been missing.

Though this primer will largely focus on the overall story, terms, and characters as they relate to the upcoming Dragon Ball Z: Burst Limit, it’s essential to point out that no new spiky-haired fighting game would be possible without Akira Toriyama, the creator of Dragon Ball. Toriyama has produced nearly 10,000 pages of intergalactic action and suspense. Whether or not you appreciate the games, movies, and Web site features that have bloomed from his overwhelming creations, you have to give the guy credit; he has created a monster that would kick Frankenstein’s patchwork butt into orbit.

Dragon Ball Z is not the beginning of the Dragon Ball saga. Rather, it tells the story of a powerful warrior named Goku, who is attempting to save the world and bring up his sons, Gohan and Goten. Goku is not a native earthling, himself. Rather, he fell to earth and, suffering a bad case of amnesia, was brought up to be good and virtuous throughout the original Dragon Ball. Though many trials and enemies beset his path to adulthood, his mysterious past hadn’t quite caught up with him…until the beginning of Dragon Ball Z.

Cue Raditz, Goku’s genocidal brother. Goku and Raditz are two of only a few remaining members of the Saiyans, a violent race of ultimate warriors. Raditz wants to thrash Goku’s adopted home, but Goku stands in his way until the two are killed by Goku’s rival Piccolo. But don’t think too much about it. Death isn’t a big deal in the Dragon Ball Z universe. More pressing is what Raditz reveals: More Saiyans are coming, and they mean trouble. Mountains around the world no doubt tremble at the very thought.

After the Saiyans come, there’s trouble with the warlord who exterminated most of the Saiyan race and a super-duper android that wants to kill the world. But what the entire plot almost always boils down to is Dragon Balls. These can grant wishes–and everyone is after them. The bad guys want them so that they can kill more people and never die, while the heroes want them so they can resurrect the ones killed by the bad guys. That is the story of Dragon Ball Z–the efforts of heroes to heal the wounds inflicted on the planet by crazy people, androids, and sometimes genies.

    Characters

    Goku
    Power Level: Off the charts
    Role: Fearless Hero
Bed Head Club for Men: He’s not just the founder, he’s also a client.

Despite the fact that he was sent to Earth to destroy it, Goku becomes the planet’s most ardent defender. He never lacks the heart or will to protect his home, which he proves by dying over and over and over again. He dies right off the bat in Dragon Ball Z, getting obliterated by Piccolo in order to prevent Raditz from harming his beloved blue-green orb. He doesn’t stop there; he gives every life he has, and boy, does he have a lot of them. If you pick him and lose a match in a video game, at least you can say “I did it…for planet…Earth!”

    Krillin
    Power: He has tough friends?
    Role: Punching Bag
Upside: Out of the three women in the entire universe, he gets the coolest one.

Krillin is the only character in the saga with an interesting girlfriend. Say what you want about Chichi (Goku’s wife) and Bulma (Vegeta’s wife); Android 18 could beat one to death with the body of the other. She is hellacious, yet Krillin is short, bald, and mostly harmless. What gives him the confidence to make little robots with a dangerous she-slayer like her and get in fights he can’t possibly win? There’s only one explanation: The dude swings a heavy pipe. While there’s no hard evidence, there are two intriguing rumors. One is that Krillin’s mysterious source of power actually shows itself in a manga issue but is mistaken for Chaozu. Another is that Toriyama toyed with the notion of letting Krillin use it like a pogo stick to escape from battle, but then he realized that was ridiculous; Krillin never runs from a fight.

    Vegeta
    Job: Warrior Prince
    Role: Tragic Foil
What’s he so mad about: He’s probably no Krillin…

Vegeta is the opposite of Goku, even though they’re both Saiyans. He is the worst kind of jerk and the model for everything cast as “Wrong” in the Dragon Ball Z saga. He’s greedy, jealous, selfish, emotional, and, worst of all, genocidal. He’d wipe out the planet just so he could be the strongest person on it. If you’re angry and feeling destructive, vent with Vegeta. Otherwise, he should be your favorite character to whip up on.

    Frieza
    Likes: Killing
    Dislikes: Dying
Commits Genocide: That’s what they saiyan.

Unlike Vegeta, Frieza is not torn between his sense of greed and his desire to see himself as a hero. No, Frieza just wants to see everyone in his way dead and smoldering. There are many other villains in the Dragon Ball Z series that are equally steadfast in their commitment to evil, but none that have accomplished quite as much as this guy. You know the Saiyans? Big strong warrior race? They were his errand boys, and when they got uppity, he killed them all, destroying their entire planet. That is some rare evil he’s got going there, and it brings a weight to his confrontations with the Z Fighters that few other epic showdowns can boast.

    Android 18
    Job: Killer Cyborg
    Role: Girl
    Likes: Little bald guys.

Considering the number of more interesting characters in the DBZ universe, along with the fact that we’ve already indirectly talked about her via Krillin, you might be surprised to see Android 18 listed here. But if you think about it, Dragon Ball Z is about men and boys fighting; training and improving each other while saving the world. Of the three main female characters, one is a housewife, one is a useless ditz, and one is a psycho-killer android who has almost no personality but has a gigantic forehead. Therefore, even though she doesn’t seem as important as Cell or Piccolo or even Tien, you could argue that, as the only empowered female in the series, Android 18 is one of the most significant characters of all.

    Terms

Dragon Ball Z is full of esoteric jargon, but if you master these terms, you’ll be passably fluent in Dragon Ball-ese:

    Dragon Balls

Dragon Balls are MacGuffins. No, that doesn’t mean they’re high-fat breakfast sandwiches; they’re plot devices that drive the motives of both the heroes and the villains in the Dragon Ball universe. If you get all the Dragon Balls together, you can summon a dragon that will grant you wishes. The villains are always trying to get these things so they can wish for immortality. However, because no one actually dies in Dragon Ball, they’d be better off wishing for a ham sandwich–or the return of Crystal Pepsi. Heroes, on the other hand, are always using the Dragon Balls to resurrect friends and loved ones from death. Death, by the way, is kind of like a 24-hour fitness center in space, but more on that later.

    Saiyans

Saiyans, no lie, are a warrior-race of were-monkeys. If they look at the moon, they transform into giant oozarus (or were-monkeys) and go bananas. Unless you cut off their tails. But don’t let that fool you, they’re also capable of turning into Super Saiyans, which are the powerful dudes with the big yellow hairdos for which the series is famous.

Saiyan-ism, naturally, is a result of Saiyan genes, which are the Dragon Ball equivalent of gamma radiation; Saiyan genes explain everything. When Goku wakes up from a good nap and is suddenly a hundred times stronger, it’s his Saiyan genes acting up. These are basically an excuse for the writers to suddenly make the main characters much, much stronger than they were before.

    Z Fighters

Nearly every good guy in Dragon Ball Z can be counted as a Z Fighter at some point or other. However, the true Z Fighters are guys like Krillin, Tien, Chaozu, and Yamcha. These brave souls serve two main purposes: They either use their feeble powers to distract a superenemy long enough for a real hero to vanquish it, or they get mutilated so violently by said enemy that their death inspires a hero to raise his power level enough to beat the bad guy.

    Death

Death, in Dragon Ball Z, is essentially prison; if you go there, you work out a lot until your release or your escape. You can also get days off of being dead as long as you reserve them early enough in advance.

    Chi

Chi is the magical power that heroes and villains use when they attack. It is related to character’s power level, which basically states the size of his or her Chi. Some characters can use techniques to multiply the force of said Chi, but they have to be careful because overuse of this technique can make their Chi explode. For instance, at the beginning of Dragon Ball Z, Goku has a power level of 300. Later on, though, he gets it all the way up to 540,000. A normal human, by comparison, is supposed to have a power level of, like 4, except for Tom Cruise, who, according to himself, is only a couple points from turning into a straight-up Super Saiyan.

    Other Media to Consider

There is a ton of Dragon Ball Z content out there, including the mangas, animes, movies, and TV series, but that doesn’t even include the original Dragon Ball saga. Rather than go into all of that here, you should take a look at these two pieces because they’ll make sense of two of the unusual characters included in Dragon Ball Z: Burst Limit, Bardock and Broly.

    Bardock–The Father of Goku

This television special tells the story of Bardock, aka Goku’s dad. Bardock was a happy warrior, going around and destroying all the life on various planets until one of his many victims showed him that his boss, Frieza, was going to wipe out Vegeta, the Saiyan home world. Not only does this TV special teach valuable lessons (don’t do anything to a planet you wouldn’t want done to your own), it also adds gravitas to the eventual showdown between Goku and Frieza.

    Broly–The Legendary Super Saiyan

There are actually three Dragon Ball Z movies that focus on Broly, this one being the first. As legend has it, there is such a thing as a Legendary Super Saiyan, which is the toughest guy in the whole universe; that’s Broly. The good news is that he’s as strong as advertised. The bad news is that he’s about as emotionally mature as an eight year old. His dad tries to control him with a device (the Dragon Ball Z equivalent of Ritalin), but when Broly stops taking his mind-control meds, the Z Fighters have to step in and calm him down permanently. Or at least until Broly–Second Coming.

As you can see, the world of Dragon Ball Z is a very rich, complex place. But to further help you find your way in it and get the most out of such games as Dragon Ball Z: Burst Limit, we cobbled together the simple flowchart on the next page to show you how each of the 21 playable characters in this upcoming fighting game relate to each other. Enjoy!

Flip flops (ABC)The truth about flip flops

Those flip flops are comfortable, but what harm are they doing to your feet? A problem shoe

    End Poverty in California
    The EPIC Movement

THE LITERARY DIGEST asked Upton Sinclair, Democratic candidate for Governor of California, to contribute the current article on the outstanding issues of the forthcoming campaign and the fundamental problems confronting the country to-day.

    By Upton Sinclair
Democratic Candidate for Governor of California

    Photo of Upton Sinclair

The meaning of our movment to End Poverty In California and its polling the largest vote ever cast in a California primary, is that our people have reached the saturation point as regards suffering. We are just about to begin the sixth year of the depression. We have one-and-a-quarter million persons dependent upon public charity, and probably as many more who are able to get only one or two days work a week or who are dependent upon relatives and friends. That is too heavy a burden of suffering for any civilized community to carry.
A mans attitude toward this situation depends upon one factor. If he believes that private industry is coming back, he is willing to wait and endure and patch things up. But finally in must occur to him to wonder whether the thing called prosperity will ever come back again. If he makes up his mind that it is not coming back, then his whole attitude changes and he is ready to consider some new procedure, thoroughgoing and drastic.
I have been telling the people of California for the past year that this is the permanent crisis, the one which does not pass away. I claim to speak with authority, because I have devoted my whole thinking life to the study of depressions, their cause and their cure; I proved my knowledge by predicting thirty-one years ago, and continuously ever since, this particular crisis, the permanent one. I assert that it is caused by the overproduction not merely of consumption goods such as food and clothing which are quickly used up, but of production goods, the great machines and factories, which do not get used up but stay right where they are.

    The Permanent Crisis

I am telling the people of America that we have ten million unemployed who will never work again while the present system endures. For the past year I have been telling the people of California that the burden of supporting their permanently unemployed million-and-a-quarter is driving cities, counties, and State directly into bankruptcy. I have told them that in some hundred and fifty mass meetings, attended by from one thousand to fifteen thousand persons. I have told them in some three hundred thousand pamphlets and some five million copies of weekly newspapers. And in August some four hundred and fifty thousand of them went to the polls and said that they agreed with me.
Just what is to be done? No more important question confronts the American people today. If we do not find an orderly solution, we are going straight into the course of horrors which we have witnessed in Germany. I have believed all my life in democracy, the right and ability of the people to govern themselves. I am now offering the people of my home State a plan and a technique of procedure which will remedy the depression by gradual stages in a peaceable and human fashion, without violence and the overthrow of our political, industrial, or social system.
The EPIC (End Poverty in California) movement proposes that our unemployed shall be put at productive labor, producing everything which they themselves consume and exchanging those goods among themselves by a method of barter, using warehouse receipts or labor certificates or whatever name you may choose to give to the paper employed. It asserts that the State must advance sufficient capital to give the unemployed access to good land and machinery, so that they may work and support themselves and thus take themselves off the backs of the taxpayers. The EPIC movement asserts that this will not hurt private industry, because the unemployed are no longer of any use to industry.
We plan a new cooperative system for the unemployed. Whether it will be permanent depents upon whether I am right in my belief about the permanent nature of the depression. If prosperty comes back the workers will drift back into private industry. No harm will have been done, because certainly the unemployed will produce something in the meantime, and the State will be that much to the good.

    New Cooperative System

To meet the immediate emergency in our State and get the money to start our new cooperative system,
we propose what we call an EPIC tax. That is an ad valorem
tax on property assessed above $100,000, which means about $250,000 of actual value. This tax will fall almost entirely upon our great corporations and utilities, and to make it easier for them we shall make it payable at the option of the State, in goods and services. That will give us most of the raw materials and all of the utility services which the unemployed will need to get production started.
We have a great irrigation and power project known as the Central Valley Project. We propose to send fifty thousand unemployed into this work and ask the farmers of the Central Valleys to bring their surplus food crops, taking credits which will be good for water and power when the project is completed. The EPIC tax will give us the needed lumber, cement, rock and gravel, steel, etc., and light, heat, power, and transportation. The project will be carried out by our Public Works Department, and it will bring industry back to life in California.

E-Weapons: Directed Energy Warfare In The 21st Century

LOS ALAMOS, New Mexico — There is a new breed of weaponry fast approaching–and at the speed of light no less. They are labeled “directed-energy weapons” and may well signal a revolution in military hardware–perhaps more so than the atomic bomb.

    edits a few paragraphs

Then there’s Active Denial Technology–a non-lethal way to use millimeter-wave electromagnetic energy to stop, deter, and turn back an advancing adversary. This technology, supported by the U.S. Marines, uses a beam of millimeter waves to heat a foe’s skin, causing severe pain without damage, and making the adversary flee the scene.

“It’s a matter of priority,” Beason said. The time is now to identify high-payoff, directed-energy projects for the smallest amounts of money, he said.

    Unknown unknowns

    EDITS..

Directed-energy technologies can offer a range of applications, from botching up an enemy’s electronics to performing “dial up” surgical, destructive strikes at the speed of light with little or no collateral damage.

Beason said that one blue sky idea of his own he tagged “the voice from heaven”. By tuning the resonance of a laser onto the Earth’s ionosphere, you can create audible frequencies. Like some boom box in the sky, the laser-produced voice could bellow from above down to the target below: “Put down your weapons.”

“So you’re using space…exploiting it. But you are going through space to attack anywhere on Earth,” Beason said.

    History lesson

Late last year, speaking before the Heritage Foundation in Washington, D.C., Beason told his audience that laser energy, the power sources, beam control, as well as knowledge about how laser beams interact with Earth’s atmosphere are quite mature. The technology is ready to shift into front line warfare status.

A PENTAGON CAMPAIGN Retired officers have been used to shape terrorism coverage from inside the TV and radio networks.

In the summer of 2005, the Bush administration confronted a fresh wave of criticism over Guantánamo Bay. The detention center had just been branded “the gulag of our times” by Amnesty International, there were new allegations of abuse from United Nations human rights experts and calls were mounting for its closure.

Dining with Donald H. Rumsfeld, second from left, during his final week as secretary of defense were the retired officers Donald W. Shepperd, left, Thomas G. McInerney and Steven J. Greer, right.

The administration’s communications experts responded swiftly. Early one Friday morning, they put a group of retired military officers on one of the jets normally used by Vice President Dick Cheney and flew them to Cuba for a carefully orchestrated tour of Guantánamo.

To the public, these men are members of a familiar fraternity, presented tens of thousands of times on television and radio as “military analysts” whose long service has equipped them to give authoritative and unfettered judgments about the most pressing issues of the post-Sept. 11 world.

Hidden behind that appearance of objectivity, though, is a Pentagon information apparatus that has used those analysts in a campaign to generate favorable news coverage of the administration’s wartime performance, an examination by The New York Times has found.

The effort, which began with the buildup to the Iraq war and continues to this day, has sought to exploit ideological and military allegiances, and also a powerful financial dynamic: Most of the analysts have ties to military contractors vested in the very war policies they are asked to assess on air.

Those business relationships are hardly ever disclosed to the viewers, and sometimes not even to the networks themselves. But collectively, the men on the plane and several dozen other military analysts represent more than 150 military contractors either as lobbyists, senior executives, board members or consultants. The companies include defense heavyweights, but also scores of smaller companies, all part of a vast assemblage of contractors scrambling for hundreds of billions in military business generated by the administration’s war on terror. It is a furious competition, one in which inside information and easy access to senior officials are highly prized.

Records and interviews show how the Bush administration has used its control over access and information in an effort to transform the analysts into a kind of media Trojan horse — an instrument intended to shape terrorism coverage from inside the major TV and radio networks.

Analysts have been wooed in hundreds of private briefings with senior military leaders, including officials with significant influence over contracting and budget matters, records show. They have been taken on tours of Iraq and given access to classified intelligence. They have been briefed by officials from the White House, State Department and Justice Department, including Mr. Cheney, Alberto R. Gonzales and Stephen J. Hadley.

In turn, members of this group have echoed administration talking points, sometimes even when they suspected the information was false or inflated. Some analysts acknowledge they suppressed doubts because they feared jeopardizing their access.

A few expressed regret for participating in what they regarded as an effort to dupe the American public with propaganda dressed as independent military analysis.

“It was them saying, ‘We need to stick our hands up your back and move your mouth for you,’ ” Robert S. Bevelacqua, a retired Green Beret and former Fox News analyst, said.

Kenneth Allard, a former NBC military analyst who has taught information warfare at the National Defense University, said the campaign amounted to a sophisticated information operation. “This was a coherent, active policy,” he said.

As conditions in Iraq deteriorated, Mr. Allard recalled, he saw a yawning gap between what analysts were told in private briefings and what subsequent inquiries and books later revealed.

“Night and day,” Mr. Allard said, “I felt we’d been hosed.”

The Pentagon defended its relationship with military analysts, saying they had been given only factual information about the war. “The intent and purpose of this is nothing other than an earnest attempt to inform the American people,” Bryan Whitman, a Pentagon spokesman, said.

It was, Mr. Whitman added, “a bit incredible” to think retired military officers could be “wound up” and turned into “puppets of the Defense Department.”

Many analysts strongly denied that they had either been co-opted or had allowed outside business interests to affect their on-air comments, and some have used their platforms to criticize the conduct of the war. Several, like Jeffrey D. McCausland, a CBS military analyst and defense industry lobbyist, said they kept their networks informed of their outside work and recused themselves from coverage that touched on business interests.

“I’m not here representing the administration,” Dr. McCausland said.

  • UTTER INCOMPETENTS
Ego and Ideology in the Age of Bush
by Thomas Oliphant [In March 2005, Oliphant suffered a brain aneurysm]

As it turned out it was Friday–famous for Bush’s gusher of a compliment to Michael Brown, Allbaugh’s former deputy and successor, who, the president said, was doing a “heckuva job.”

The link to the Bush family turned out to be chief of staff Andrew card, who had been dispatched by the first President Bush to south Florida to do damage control after the initial response to Andrew bordered on the nonexistent. this time, the article noted, things were different, with Card running things “for President who is [personally taking reins of relief.”

There was just one problem, of course [Em assaults aside]. While typically arrogant and self-promoting White House was crowing, more than a thousand people had been killed, the Gulf Coast was a moonscape from the Texas to the Florida borders, New Orleans had drowned, thousands of people were stranded in the flood, and tens of thousands wer
e penned inside the fetid confines of the New Orleans Superdome and the Convention center with no relief or even drinking water in sight [mine:sewers overspill into water pipes, etc]. And this was just the beginning to an ongoing crisis of biblical proportions.

The Bush administration is unusual in many, many respects [my note: I pelt!], but nowhere more so than in its trademark combination of arrogance ineptitude. the truth is that no one had learned anything of consequence from Hurricane Andrew, no one in authority had followed any of the clear signals of approaching catastrophe in the form of Katrina, and the response to the storm’s aftermath had all the trappings of post-invasion Iraq. It was not one huge screw-up; that might have been easier to fix.

Many subjects of US torture experiments reported that while being tortured “to split their personalities” they were forced to experiment with desensitization and hypnosis to beat polygraph instruments and disassociation experiments to beat the newer brain printing MRI technology. Find out the latest CIA methods for infiltration as described by hundreds of test subjects. These are described in both books offered on this website. Additionally, we have interviewed a security clearance agent who has provided all the procedures for background checks and polygraph questions in order to obtain most top secret level security clearances. Those who have obtained top secret, secret, confidential clearances, did you ever wonder why such a big deal is paid to find out if you or relatives have ever sought help for a number of psychological issues? Revenge is the answer in case it matters to you. This report has been extended to include the easier task of false positives in both polygraph and brain printing. In order to further the “plausible denial” game and to weed out good patriotic citizens to place a betrayer agent who may be next in line, the MKultra series of remote neural/body influences have been thoroughly studied for a couple decades. Heart rate, perspiration, rapid eye gaze, pupil contraction and dilation, and even topped off with a nervous eye twitch and stutter has been achieved in most human experiments. Even a single one of these brain entrainment capabilities would fail a polygraph, but the CIA mafia has mastered all of them. The latest research has been to induce false positive recognition of events in the newer brain printing technology since there is a precedence of it being admissible in court. Yes, good people from all over the world can be framed now for any made up crime. The courts still refuse to recognize “mind crimes” like what was done to Ted to turn him into the UNA-bomber. ‘that was a good try big guy”

They play the dumb game of “I don’t understand how the physics of directed energy neurological weapons system work or the huge history of programmed assassins [big guy? are you ready to commit murder or looking for a Harvard Graduate Program??? My firends and how I drove 'em to it?]sent to kill scientists in the civilian sector?” You can’t teach a child’s mind three PhD level disciplines in less than a week to a jury and judge. There is a judge in the Philippines who became targeted and they would tell him how to rule on his cases until he admitted an outside influence of neural communication. They finally disbarred him. This judge described his “advisors” as his dwarf friends. We got a recent communication from a saint, who didn’t identify them self, that the discrediting portion of the early operation of the CIA scripts for silent assignation is called “Snow White”. Type this URL into your browser to see a condensed comparison between the CIA bag of tricks from 1953 signed by the General Inspector and the seven Dwarfs as described by the anonymous saint. It looks like they only change code names and nothing else evolves in their tactics to create sleeper assassins. http://www.thematrixdeciphered.com/snowwhite.htm

The State of California v. Charles Manson) et al.
    Delivered by Vincent Bugliosi
Los Angeles, California, January 15, 1971

Your Honor, defense counsel, ladies, and gentlemen:

As you know, the defendants Charles Manson, Susan Atkins, and Patricia Krenwinkel are charged with the five Tate murders occurring on August the ninth, 1969, and they are charged with the murders of Leno and Rosemary LaBianca, on August 10, 1969. They are also charged with the crime of conspiracy to commit murder.

The defendant Leslie Van Houten is not charged with the five Tate murde
rs. She is charged with the murder ofLeno and Rosemary LaBianca, and with the crime of conspiracy to commit murder…………

DEFENDANT MANSON: The defense never rested. The lawyers, the judge’s lawyers, rested.

MR. BUGLIOSI: I am sure all of you heaved a sigh of relief. It has been an incredibly long, grueling trial and an enormous imposition on all of you. Before I discuss the evidence and the testimony in this case, I would like to briefly go over the law that you are going to be dealing with during your deliberations. . . .

Although the evidence at this trial shows that Charles Manson was the leader of the conspiracy to commit these murders, there is no evidence that he actually personally killed any of the seven victims in this case. However, the joint responsibility rule of conspiracy makes him guilty of all seven murders.

DEFENDANT MANSON: Even if I have never been in the Gotham Bank!

MR. BUGLIOSI: Now that you have had a little legal background, I would like to discuss with you the evidence and the facts of this case.
